The scope of the Journal is Speleogenesis, the origin and development of dissolution caves. Speleogenesis can be adequately understood only within the broader context of the Hydrogeologic Setting and Evolution of Karst. In its turn, speleogenesis is a primary process that determines essential features of the hydrogeology of karst, and guides its evolution in many ways. Therefore these fields also fall into the scope of the Journal.

In its quarterly issues, the Journal publishes original peer-reviewed articles submitted by authors, invited papers that review and summarise major aspects of the field and papers selected from symposium proceedings and more traditional, disciplinary and speleological journals published world-wide. The Editors and the members of the Editorial Board select papers on the basis of their potential to highlight important and interesting developments in the area of speleogenesis, karst hydrogeology and evolution.

The general aim of this virtual Journal is to foster studies in the fields by familiarising all cave and karst scientists with important recent advances and by concentrating in a single and easily accessible place much essential knowledge about speleogenesis, hydrogeology and evolution of karst that is at present documented in a vast array of diffuse literature.

The Journal employs several means to achieve this aim. Firstly, the Journal intends to provide users with experts' literature search for important speleogenesis papers across the wide range of journals and symposium proceedings, and with papers that review and summarise core knowledge on major aspects of the field. Thirdly, with all kinds of papers, constantly accumulated throughout years in a single and easy accessible place, the Journal will provide users with a unique structured scientific resource, a kind of a reference library on the fundamentals and important developments in the fields, a solid basis for reflection about their scope and for indicating possible trends for future research. The Journal also provides a special informal Forum for exchange of the opinions and ideas, debating issues and rising questions. Also, the Journal will maintain a bibliography search facility and provide for reviews of traditionally published most important and interesting works.

Last but not least, the online Journal provides a unique possibility to update or revise papers previously published, whenever the need arises, to account for newly emerging facts, research results and ideas.
